Welcome

A quick orientation to who I am and what you'll find here.

I've worked at Brigham Young University since 1996, and I currently direct proficiency services and research at the Center for Language Studies and coordinate the Language Sciences Laboratory. My PhD is in Instructional Psychology and Technology, with a specialization in educational measurement and learning, and my research and publications focus on language proficiency, assessment, second language acquisition, self-assessment, and objective measurement. As an ACTFL consultant, I facilitate workshops on language proficiency and Rasch measurement throughout the United States and Europe.

In the classroom and in graduate mentoring, I try to treat students as fellow travelers rather than passive recipients of information — coaching them through real problems so they build skills of self-assessment, initiative, and sound reasoning with data that outlast any single course. You can read the full statement on the Teaching Philosophy page.
